      YORKSHIRE TERRIER

The Yorkshire Terrier is an outgoing little dog. They have a big dog mentality in a little package. Yorkies do make excellent pets, as they are very affectionate and great with children as long as your children realize this is not a toy. My favorite saying is "Toy dog does not mean play toy". A yorkie loves to be loved on and do literally understand most of the words you speak and love for you to look at them and talk to them.

Yorkies are not the easiest breed to housetrain but they are not the hardest breed either. You will spend some time doing this, but I guarantee that you will do it quicker than training a child. A lot of patience and a lot of love will accomplish this.

What you have to remember is that they were originally bred for ratting and this has remained with the breed. I recently had two of my Yorkie champion girls nail a rat, one while she was 5 weeks pregnant. Funny now but scary when it happened. They were full of themselves though, thought they were tough after that. So don't think this is a little soft dog that is going to be afraid of everything because they are not afraid at all. In fact as the owner you will have to watch them to make sure they don't get themselves into trouble.

When people ask the drawbacks of a Yorkie, I always tell them that sometimesYorkies are too smart for their own good. I personally love that about them. I can watch them sitting there actually thinking about what they can do next. They are able to think for themselves. If you want a dog to just go docilely along than a Yorkie is not for you. Yorkies are trained by love alone, so if you have plenty of that and plenty of patience than the Yorkie is the breed for you.
