      Buyer beware!!!
Do not buy a Yorkie puppy online. It's fine to find someone there, but make sure it's someone that you can visit the home. If you are going to buy online, you may as well just look in your own local newspaper, atleast you can go see the puppies and the home from a newspaper ad. A tremendous amount of scam goes on over the internet. When you buy a puppy, you want to be able to go to the home of the breeder. Be very careful, this is a lifelong purchase and you want to deal with someone with the best interests of the Yorkshire Terrier breed. Also be very sure the puppy is from AKC registered Yorkshire Terrier parents. That is not a guarantee of quality, but is better than the other organizations. Your best bet is to deal with those that breed for a true purpose other than money and that is those that are breeding for themselves to have a new showdog.

SHOW BREEDERS Show breeders are the ideal people to talk to and get your puppy from. As show people we are breeding to improve the breed. It's almost a race against the other breeder, all of us hoping to achieve the ultimate...that perfect dog! We're not trying to accomplish that by breeding to just be breeding. We are working from the best, we breed to the best. We are producing the best! The perfect dog will probably never be created, as breeding is a very hard challenge in life, but an ethical responsible breeder will be out showing their dogs to prove that they are producing the necessary qualities to achieve a championship title, which is the test that you are on the right track in a breeding program and are contributing to the betterment of the breed.

Of all things do not try to economize on a dog, this is a living breathing thing and you want the very best. This animal will be living with you for many years, you don't want something that has been produced just for money with no care to the ultimate outcome of the animal or the animals long term health. As with anything, you get what you pay for.

We not only breed a dog to look like what they are suppose to, but are working within acceptable bloodlines to reduce problems within a line and spend the necessary money on feed, vet care and spend lots of socialization time with the puppies to make them some day go on to be well adjusted adults. These dogs represent the breed and grow to look like the dog that you thought you were purchasing.

A reputable responsible breeder spends the necessary time with each and every puppy to assure that it grows into a social adult dog. There is a tremendous amount of work involved with raising a dog through the early months and a reputable breeder will spend the necessary time and keep the puppies until a proper age to assure that they are emotionally and physically ready to go to a new home. A reputable breeder will ask you numerous questions about how the buyer is equipped to care for the dog and about the buyers family. They will make you feel like you are adopting their child and in essense, you are.

To locate a good breeder, start out calling your local breed club. You can also contact AKC for your parent club for the breed you are trying to locate. The Parent club will put you in contact with breeders in your area. Be sure you have a guarantee on your puppy and it comes from clean conditions and has been well socialized. Do NOT buy from any breeder that sells a puppy under 12 weeks of age. They are NOT emotionally ready for their new homes.

It is highly recommended to find a breeder that does early spay/neutering as the dog is undergoing anesthetia early and is showing you that you are purchasing a healthy puppy.

      INFORMATION ON PUPPY MILLS
      AND BACKYARD BREEDERS
A puppy mill breeds stictly for monetary gain. You ask how they can accomplish this? Well they start out with the cheapest male and females that they can find and start breeding them, regardless of their poor quality and whether or not they are compatible for one another. They look for bigger females so they can produce as many puppies as possible per litter. They provide minimal vet care, feed cheap food, do no socialization. To them this is just business. Unfortunately they also believe in "out with the old and in with the new," so when a female is no longer having good size litters they dispose of the dog and keep a younger one to take her place. They toss away the puppies as so much trash by loading them in vans or plane cargo holds and off they go to a pet store. Terrified of it's new surroundings, you now have a traumatic episode in this puppies short life. Some will get over it, some won't. By buying a puppy from a pet store, you encourage the mills to keep on breeding and allow those poor dogs to continue living in barns with no human love or kindness. Cruel beyond words.

A BYB (backyard breeder) breeds for monetary gain, or fun, or to show the kids, or whatever little reason they can come up with. This is extremely irresponsible. They figure it's a nice easy way to make a few extra bucks. How sad for the breed and how sad for the puppies and later problems they can come up with because this irresponsible breeder hasn't a clue. Take a look around, call your vet and ask him how many problems these dogs have. Vets will acknowledge that most BYB dogs have numerous problems, including lots of skin problems which will cost a fortune in the dogs lifetime getting cortisone shots which eventually destroys the liver which then causes the dog to die prematurely. A BYB knows nothing about background on the dog, how can they possibly know not to breed Jane to Tarzan because it might produce liver shunts. There are no known lines of dogs to trace & follow to know which ways to breed and not to breed.

Which is the worst to buy from? I say don't buy from either the mills or the BYB. The mill dogs get the worst treatment, but atleast the puppy mills acknowledges what they are. The BYB knows they are doing wrong also, but tries to sugar coat it with little excuses, such as they love their dogs. They say they can't afford to show their dogs. Well what do they do with the money from puppy sales? An ethical show breeder uses it towards showing dogs. Well that's all fine and dandy, but what happens to the person who bought a puppy that just died from shunts because the knowledge wasn't used to breed the parents in the 1st place. It's real easy to say I love my dogs. The question is "Do you love the breed?" If so don't destroy it by indiscriminately breeding inferior dogs. A dog may be nice but unless they are super, worthy of being a champion, don't breed.

A lot of people assume these BYB and puppy mills probably have decent dogs also, that they are just BYB and mills because they don't show. This is untrue as they can't come to a good breeder to get their breeding stock, as ethical responsible breeders only sell show dogs to other ethical breeders with very stringent contracts. All pets are sold already spayed and neutered.

Too many people are breeding for money and are irresponsibly breeding and placing those dogs, and far too many of these are ending up in rescues and shelters. Do NOT buy from those breeders and they will have to stop breeding. I will continue to speak up for the dogs left behind being used only as breeding machines.
I will continue to speak up for those dogs because I do happen to believe

THAT EVERY DOG DESERVES A GREAT HOME!
