      FEEDING

It is really important to feed a high quality dry dog food to your dogs. I personally feed Iams and Iams Eukanuba and have now for more than 20 years. I find this an excellent food to maintain good health, keep the teeth in overall decent condition and maintain a well bodied dog. My dogs maintain fabulous coats and do not have itchy skin which is associated with improper diets. A premium food is a little more expensive than some of your store bought brands, but the difference in quality is worth the extra amount that you pay. I would not feed my child cheap inferior food and I do not feed my dogs cheap inferior food. Iams' food is an excellent one and I just mention what I feed since it works so well for me. If you choose another brand just make sure it is another premium food so that you are providing your dog the best. Just like us, our animals need all the proper nutrients for a healthy happy life.

Once when I took one of my 15 year old Yorkies in for her annual bloodwork, her protein was slightly high, which is to be expected for an older dog, so my Vet had me change her to the Iams Senior Diet, which I put all my older ones on at that time. They are maintaining on that really well. I highly recommend doing annual bloodwork atleast yearly when they hit 10 years of age, to check what is going on in there. Surprising what you can sometimes learn and change by something as simple as diet to maybe ward off any potential health problems.

The eating of dry food does help keep the teeth a little cleaner than feeding them moist food. In addition you need to either brush the teeth at home or have your Vet do periodic teeth cleanings on your dog. Their teeth will be lost prematurely without an occasional cleaning from your vet.

The times that I do use moist, I will take a can of Iams or Pedigree & mash it all over the dry Iams, so that they are still having to crunch the dry food. This is a nice way to get a puppy or an adult to eat that is maybe not feeling well. They will usually eat their food with a little can mashed on it.

With toy dogs I recommend either self feeding or feeding atleast twice per day as adults. Puppies need to eat more often, atleast 3-4 meals per day to help prevent them going into hypoglycemia, an imbalance from lack of food.
