Necrotizing Encephalitis in the Yorkie
Yorkie Necrotizing Encephalitis is being seen now and unfortunately being seen enough that it is being given a breed name with it much as Pug Dog Encephalitis is. Not a lot is known about this disease. For information on YNE in greater detail, consult veterinary sources and research good internet sites. What is known is that it is an inflammation of the brain that strikes some Yorkies. Not a lot is known although they are seeing similarities with the Pug, but this is still very much being looked at as in some breeds it can be vaccine related.
Symptoms:
The neurological signs of Necrotizing Encephalitis include lethargy, seizures, head pressing, depression, central blindness and neck pain. Cranial nerve involvement is inconsistent. Abnormal gait and postural reactions may be seen. Cervical pain may mimic primary spinal cord disease and must therefore be evaluated carefully. The brain is inflamed and necrotic. The disease is invariably
progressive.
Necrotizing Encephalitis is a non-infectious inflammatory brain disease seen in the Pug, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu and Boston Terrier breeds. Multiple observations of this condition around the world indicate that this entity may be more widespread among young to middle-aged dogs of small size, particularly among the toy breeds.
The suspected diagnosis of this condition is based on results of the CSF analysis, and brain MRI or CT-scan images.
