You'll find tips on health concerns like Liver Shunts MVD PSVA, Protein Losing Enteropathy PLE, Luxating Patellas, Neurological diseases, and other information you'll need. The problems in the breed have increased in the last 15 years, mostly because of irresponsible breeding. Hopefully this can be improved by reputable breeders over time. Until that time comes, it's important that you do your research on them.

Choosing Ethical Sources

Hopefully this information will help you in selecting someone reputable to deal with. Be careful if you are getting a puppy online and choosing a breeder that you are dealing with a reputable show exhibitor. Be very careful with anyone offering Teacup Yorkies or Mini or any other such term. There is no adult dog that will fit in a Teacup and already tells you the caliber of the person using such a term. The quality and health will not be there, as the only thing important is a tiny dog. When looking for a dog, look to someone that breeds for the overall dog, which is a show exhibitor.

A normal size dog varies in the size they produce. A more normal size toy dog between 5 and 7 lbs is a really small dog itself but more capable of living in a normal household and not as prone to getting stepped on or having to worry every minute if they ate enough. The tinies can be very prone to hypoglycemia also if they miss meals, so all around you will be much happier with a normal size dog.

Yorkie Rescue

Unfortunately this is something that becomes more and more necessary with the popularity of them sky rocketing and the backyard breeder and puppymillers mass producing them. A dog's ranking high in popularity ends up being pretty much the ruination of the breed. I look back at what happened to Cocker Spaniels many years ago and then later Poodles and it's sad to see that already happening to a breed that I love and adore and know for the wonderful dogs a well bred one is. I rarely see a quality puppy out there in the pet market anymore. The popular breeds become known as nasty tempered and lacking quality. Well yes I guess so since these are from people that haven't a clue what to breed for and even if they did, they wouldn't because they are doing it strictly for money which means putting very little into their dogs, mass produce them for market, and go onto the next one. I think the average person in this day and age knows better, yet they still buy from these kinds of people and all it does is encourage each and eveyone of them to continue along since they continue being able to sell their poor quality animals.

The sad part of this is the numbers of these poor babies that are ending up in Yorkshire Terrier Rescue. 15 years ago I was rarely involved in a rescue. Now rescue is very high, so high that is has become a problem placing these dogs. Of course some of the reasons are they are asking so much for a problem rescue dog. Realistically if the dog didn't have some problems it wouldn't be in rescue. It's not often that a dog goes into rescue without some type of issues. Some times it's temperament problems, some times health problems, some times potty issues. For those people that can deal with that, great, but rescue dogs take a lot of time and compassion and realizing you may never get the dog over whatever it's particular problem is. For the working person this is not always possible either because these situations can take a lot more time than is available.

I have been involved with rescue on a small scale for all the years I have been in dogs. For those in this general area I will gladly talk with you and help how I can. For those looking, and feel you have a perfect home for a rescue, give me a call and I will take your name and hopefully get you with the right person that needs to place their dog. If looking for a rescue group be very careful dealing with just anyone, because anyone can call themselves a rescue. Rescue groups are popping up left and right. Sounds noble? Hmm, not always. If you feel this is the way you want to go then by all means do so but proceed with a great deal of caution. No one can save them all, but occasionally just one can make a difference. I will continue to speak up for those dogs because I do happen to believe
"That every dog deserves a great home!"
